Getting started

How do I create my first trip?

Tap the + on the Trips screen, give it a name and destination, pick your dates, then set a total budget. Your trip becomes a boarding pass you can log expenses against.

Can I use more than one currency?

Yes. Set a home currency in Settings, then log expenses in any currency and PocketTrip converts them to your home currency using the latest rates.

How is my remaining budget calculated?

Remaining is your total budget minus everything you have spent, with refunds excluded. Large one-off costs like flights do not skew your daily average.

Is my data backed up?

Your trips sync privately through your iCloud account, so they are available on all your devices and restored when you reinstall.

Logging expenses

Why don't flights and hotels affect my daily budget?

Turn on Exclude from daily metrics in an expense's Options to keep big one-off costs out of your daily average and daily budget. They still count towards your total budget.

What happens when I mark an expense as refunded?

Refunded expenses, a toggle under Options when you edit an expense, drop out of every spending total and stat but stay on record so you can still find them.

Can one expense cover several days?

Add an end date to an expense to make it multi-day. Switch on Spread multi-day expenses in the entries menu to split the amount evenly across those days in your list.

How do I add a tip to an expense?

Open the Tip section in the expense form and pick a percentage or set your own. PocketTrip adds it on top of the amount and remembers the tip separately.

Can I scan a receipt instead of typing it in?

Yes. Tap Scan Receipt on the dashboard, or the scan button in the expense form, and PocketTrip fills in the amount, merchant, date and category. It runs entirely on your device and needs Apple Intelligence, on an iPhone running iOS 26 or later. It is part of Pro.

Why isn't my expense showing on the map?

Only expenses with a location appear on the map. Add one in the expense form with Use current location or by searching, or press and hold a spot on the map to log it there.

Trips & budgets

Can I edit a trip after creating it?

Open the more menu on any tab and choose Edit Trip to change the name, dates, budget or theme colour.

What's the difference between total and daily budget?

The total budget covers the whole trip. The daily budget is what you can spend per remaining day to stay on track.

How do I split expenses with travel companions?

Add travel companions to your trip, in the trip setup or later from Edit Trip. When you add an expense, turn on Split and pick who shares it. The cost is divided evenly and each person's share is tracked. Use Paid by to record who actually paid, so balances stay correct even when a companion picks up the bill. The Settle Up card on your dashboard turns all of that into the simplest set of payments: who owes whom, and how much. Tap a suggested payment or Record a payment to log a repayment, and past payments are kept as history. Everything is shown in your home currency, and the share button sends a clean summary of the balances to your group.

Can I mark a trip as finished?

Yes. When a trip ends you can complete it, and it turns into a shareable boarding pass with a summary and export options.

Can I reopen a trip I've completed?

Yes. Open the completed trip's summary and tap Reactivate trip, or reactivate it from the trip list, to make it active again and keep logging expenses.

Can I change the weather location for a trip?

Tap the weather card and choose Search Location to pin a specific city, or Current Location to follow your device. Your choice is saved per trip.

Categories & payments

Can I add my own categories?

Yes, with Pro. In Settings then Categories, tap Add in any group to create a custom category with its own icon and colour.

What happens to my expenses if I delete a category?

They keep the category's name, icon and colour, so nothing looks broken. Add a category with the same name again, or tap Reset, and those expenses reconnect automatically.

How do I pin a category to the top?

Press and hold a category and choose Add favorite, a Pro feature. Favourites get a star and move to a section at the top of the picker.

How do I set a default payment method?

In Settings then Payment Methods, press and hold a method and choose Set as default. New expenses then start with that method already selected.

Currencies & rates

How often are exchange rates updated?

Rates refresh roughly every 12 hours and are cached, so conversions keep working even when you are offline.

Which currency is used for totals?

All totals are shown in your home currency. You can change it any time in Settings then Home currency.

Why does a converted amount look slightly off?

Rates move constantly. PocketTrip stores the rate at the moment you logged the expense, so historic amounts stay stable.

Widgets & reminders

Why does my widget say "Open PocketTrip"?

Widgets follow the trip you have selected in the app. Open the app and pick a trip, and the widget fills in on its next refresh.

Why is a widget blurred with a lock on it?

That widget is a Pro feature. Tap it to upgrade to Pro, or use the free Remaining budget widget, which works on the Home and Lock Screen.

How do reminders to log expenses work?

In Settings then Notifications, choose a daily reminder at a set time, or an after-inactivity reminder that nudges you when you have not logged for a while. Reminders only fire during your trip dates.

Premium & billing

What do I get with Pro?

Pro adds unlimited trips, live currency rates, receipt scanning and full export and backup.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The yearly PocketTrip Pro plan comes with a 7-day free trial, so you can try everything in Pro before you pay. If you cancel during the trial you are not charged.

How do I manage my subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by the App Store. Manage or cancel any time from your Apple ID settings.

Data & privacy

Where is my data stored?

Everything lives on your device and in your private iCloud database. We do not have access to your trips or expenses.

Do you share my data with anyone?

No. Your financial data is never sold or shared. Optional analytics are anonymous and can be turned off.

How do I delete everything?

Deleting the app removes local data. You can also remove the app's iCloud data from your device's iCloud storage settings.
